How can I earn money on my writing skills?

There are several choices to chose from or, you can do a mixture of them (more appropriate)

  • Build a Niche Blog - If writing is something you enjoy and you´re actually good at it, this would be my number one choice on how to monetize your skill. I mean, it´s more of a medium-long tail project but, once it takes off, trust me, you will love it!
  • Write Articles for Popular Blogs, Magazines, and Journals - You can find places to “guest post” for them and start building a portfolio and a name for yourself online.
  • Kindle Publishing (Amazon) - Plenty of writers have taken their skill to Amazon and self-publish their own book and made good money from this.
  • Freelance writing - There are sites that will pay you anywhere between $30 to $200 for a single piece
  • Ghostwriting - This is another popular way to make money as a writer. Plenty of people have the idea, the plot, and even small part of the content but don´t know how to put their thoughts into writing so, they hire writers to do this for them and publish the content on their names.
  • Make Money Writing on Medium - Most people don´t know this but Medium is a free blogging platform that is made for writers. Medium created a partner program so that writers can get paid to write on their Medium profile or on Medium’s thousands of publications.

We highly recommend you to start with small publications on places like Medium and start building a name for yourself.

Once you have a few articles there, start building your online presence by setting up accounts on Facebook and Pinterest mostly.

These social media platforms are perfect for this.

We also highly recommend you to search for jobs as a freelance writer on places like Upwork or People Per Hour.

Also, there are numerous writing marketplaces looking to hire new writers. But this is something I don´t recommend doing as you will be getting less for your articles since these sites mostly will be reselling your services. You´re better of gaining control of your work by offering your talent on freelancing platforms.

You can also set up a website and take your talent to the next level. Once you gain some notoriety online from your Medium publications and social media presence, it won´t be hard for you to take your writing business to the next level.

Personally, I think opening a couple of blogs, writing on medium, gradually building a social media presence, and offering your services on freelancing platforms like Upwork it´s the way I would do it.
